From the foundation of Kiev University in 1834, lectures on psychology were closely related to Orthodox Church doctrine, in accordance with instructions of The Synod. That’s why sychology was taught by theologians.
Only reform of University education in 1863 made it possible to teach psychology by persons with secular education. Mainly professors-philosophers provided teaching psychology at that time, and later by psychologists, who occupied the chair of philosophy.
One of the most famous psychologists, who worked in Kiev University, was Professor G.I.Chelpanov (1862-1936), who founded the experimental psychology laboratory (since 1912 G.I.Chelpanov worked in Moscow, where he created and headed the first in Russia Institute of Experimental Psychology).
I.A.Sikorsky (1845-1918), who had worked for a long time as Professor of Psychiatry in the Medical Faculty of the University, had also made significant contributions to the development of psychological science in Kiev University.

For the first time Psychology Department in Kiev University was founded in the Philosophy Faculty in 1946. Also in 1946 two Departments of psychology began their work: one attached to the philosophy faculty, and the other — to the philological faculty. In 1956 after cessation teaching of psychology in secondary schools both departments were closed. However, the philosophy faculty continued the psychological specialisation of students — starting from the third year of study, groups of 5-71, who majored in psychology and received the chance to attend the principal courses related to certain branches of psychology. These students could defend their diploma in psychology, but their occupation was not indicated in their diploma certificate, where the qualification “teacher of philosophy” was printed.

In 1967 the Department of Psychology, which started the training of psychologists, was created again in the philosophy faculty of the University. In 1971 two futher Departments were created, the Department of General and Engineer Psychology, and the Department of Social and Educational psychology.

The current Department of General and Engineer psychology numbers 10 teaching staff — 1 Doctor of Science/Professor, 6 candidates of science/readers, 3 assistants without scientific degree. The department provides special teaching and training of students in general psychology and psychology of labor. Head – Prof. Yuri Trofimov.

The staff of the Department of Social and Pedagogical Psychology numbers 8 teachers — 1 Doctor of Science/Professor, 4 candidates of science/readres, 2 candidate of science. The Department of Socilal and Educational Psychology provides special teaching and training of students in Social and Educational psychology. Head — Dr. Nicolas Kornev.

Both Departments have postgraduate studentship — 3-4 postgraduate students join each chair annually after competitive examinations.

Since 1989 the Psychology Departments has Scientific Council, which at government level was granted the right to confer scientific degrees of candidate of psychological sciences (PhD) and doctor of psychological science (Dr.Sc.) in the three specialties of general psychology and history of psychology, medical psychology, psychology of labor and ergonomics (Chairman of the Scientific Council — Professor Leonid Burlatchuk).

In 1990 Psychology Departments were transferred from the Philosophy Faculty to the Sociology and Psychology Faculty, founded the same year2. Currently this faculty has tree-degree system of students training: “bachelor” (four years); “specialist” (five years); “magister” (5 or 6 years). The Sociology & Psychology Faculty also has in its structure three Sociological Departments, which provide teaching and training of sociologists, and the Department of social work and education, which since 1995 trains social workers and has postgraduate studentship.

Training of students on clinical psychology, since 1973, was provided on the Department of social and pedagogical psychology (approximately 5-6 students, who specialize in this field of psychology, each year). From 1982 the training of students in clinical psychology has been provided by the Department of Psychodiagnostics and Medical Psycology (circa 15-16 students annually)3.

Every year competitive selection of admitted students for training on Psychology gives 50 persons, competition level when entering varies from 5 to 10 candidates for one place.
